A variant is a different version of the same model. The body, the cabin space and usually the engine stay the same. What changes is the safety, comfort and infotainment equipment included, and that is why the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive variant can run to tens of thousands of ringgit.

What usually changes between variants
Differences between variants rarely show up in anything you can see from outside. They show up in the equipment list.
- Active safety systems such as A.S.A. on a Perodua or ADAS on a Proton
- Number of airbags
- Headlamp type, halogen or LED
- Wheel size and design
- Seat material, fabric or leatherette
- Infotainment screen, reverse camera and parking sensors
- Manual against automatic climate control
What usually does not change
On most Perodua and Proton models, the cheapest and the most expensive variant share the same underlying car. Length, width, boot space and body structure are the same. The engine is usually the same too, unless the model is genuinely offered with more than one engine.
So a base variant is not a smaller or weaker car. It is the same car with a shorter equipment list.
Why this matters
Because the price step between two neighbouring variants does not always match what you get. Sometimes a few thousand ringgit brings safety equipment that genuinely matters. Sometimes it brings larger wheels and a wider screen.
The simplest way to judge it is to look at the actual list of differences between the two variants you are considering, not at the marketing tagline.
